EMAILWIRE.COM, January 12, 2017 ) North Bay, Canada - January 11th, 2017 -- As part of the XP Lab's ongoing campaign to increase public awareness of the newest breakthroughs in health research, the company's Fitness Pulse website has recently covered a pair of complimentary studies regarding men's health. The studies in question covered the effects of saw palmetto supplementation versus prescription drugs such as finasteride.
Finasteride is a widely-prescribed drug which treats both male pattern baldness and benign prostatic hyperplasia, otherwise known as prostate enlargement. Benign prostatic hyperplasia is most often age-related and usually leads to urinary problems, which is one of the primary concerns alleviated using finasteride. It works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the prostate. DHT is also the hormone largely responsible for many types of alopecia, or hair loss. Studies are ongoing regarding its exact role in the development prostate cancer.
Similarly, saw palmetto is frequently taken as a supplement to prevent urinary tract problems and prostate enlargement. The working theory is that the extract is able to work within the body to block DHT much the same way as finasteride does. Its usage can be traced back to European settlers in North America as well as Mayans and Native Americans, most notably the Seminole Indians, who used it as an expectorant and antiseptic agent.

The two compatible studies regarding DHT which have been discussed on Fitness Pulse cover a study from Euromed in Barcelona, Spain and a large clinical analysis by researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital. All participants involved in both studies were seeking relief from urinary tract complications due to enlarged prostates. Over a 72-week period, patients in Massachusetts took 320 milligrams of saw palmetto per day but experienced no overwhelming improvement in their urinary tract function. However, researchers in Barcelona have been able to confirm that saw palmetto is as effective as finasteride in blocking the conversion of testosterone into DHT. What this means for the future of men's health and medicine is not entirely clear. It is, however, certain that more research into the role of DHT in male urinary tract problems is necessary, as is research into understanding the role of saw palmetto as a supplement for prostate health. It also suggests that saw palmetto could be a viable supplement for the secondary usage of finasteride, which is male pattern baldness.
