(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 28, 2010 ) Courtenay, BC - That nerd is Dian Smit, owner of the Comox Valley “Nerds On Site.” She generously donated her services to set up wifi that was provided free to thousands of guests, performers, and staff; and was on stand-by during the entire festival in the event of any technology issues. Smit also coordinated the loan of the hardware from Meraki, which she set up, and the internet access provided by Shaw Cable.
Not only did guests and performers at MusicFest enjoy the wireless service, but it allowed journalists from near and far to easily upload videos, stories, and photos with just a few key strokes.
Whether people were tweeting, visiting on Facebook, or watching the World Cup--surfing the internet on laptops and smartphones--the system performed smoothly as 20 gigabytes of information were downloaded and uploaded during the three days.
In addition to wifi during the event, which covered many acres at the fairgrounds including the concert areas and inner field camping grounds, SmitÂ’s system allowed organizers to communicate more effectively during set-up and throughout the event. She also donated the technology set-up for the festival office months in advance.
According to one festival visitor, “It was really a nice surprise to see the wifi symbol on my iPhone in the middle of the concert bowl—knowing I could sit and chat with friends and watch the game without worrying about going over my data limit.”
Nerds On Site, which Smit opened in Comox Valley in 2009, provides a variety of technology services and equipment for clients large and small. From preventive maintenance check-ups and tune-ups of personal or business computers to the design and installation of networks, the services offered by Smit and her company are solutions-oriented and creative. Disaster planning and recovery, as well as low-cost data back-up, are services also offered.
Smit is a proud member of the Comox Valley Home-Based Business Association as well as the WomenÂ’s Business Network and the Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce.
