(I-Canada-News.Com, June 06, 2013 ) Toronto, Canada -- South Carolina has decided to retract on plans to tax and regulate electronic cigarettes as of now. The state is prepared to wait and see how the federal government deals with the situation before becoming involved with the taxing and regulating of the product.
R.J. Reynolds of Tobacco Co. stated that GreenvilleOnline.com that he believes the federal regulations are on the way, however “nobody knows when.”
The House Ways and Means Committee has adjourned the debate on a bill that is set to create taxes to be levied on the e-cigarettes. That essentially kills the bill for the remainder of 2013, according to Brian White, who is chairman of the committee and chief sponsor of the bill.
Representative Rita Allison is among those who sponsored the bill early into its creation, as well as sharing the subcommittee that had a hand in the starting phases of the bill.
“We were going to be the only state to put on an excise tax and then the feds could come down with another tax,” she said. “There were just a lot of questions. This is the first year of a two-year term, and it’s not like it’s lost.”
Representative Gary Smith of Simpsonville, who is a member of the panel, stated that he wanted to see the government taxes on cigarettes prior to supporting any plan for the state to tax the products.
“I don’t think it would have any impact upon them whether we do it or not,” he said of the federal government. “I think they’ll go ahead with whatever they want to do. If they want to institute a tax that’s probably what they’ll do.”
The owner of Vapor Room Cafe, Jason Hagan, stated that the e-cigarette dealers have done their best to band together to thwart general tax proposals on the products.
“I guess a little pressure helped,” he said. “We’re just going to keep pushing them until they decide they don’t want to pursue it any more.”
