(I-Canada-News.Com, July 26, 2012 ) La Prairie, Canada -- According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, police officer and detectives earn, on average, around $55,000 a year. Not bad for a profession that only requires a high school diploma or GED.
However, Police Officer Steps cautions that becoming a police officer requires candidates to undergo a rigorous process, one that includes a thorough criminal and civil history check, as well as a review of driving and military records. Even spouses, previous employers and neighbors may be interviewed as part of the check.
Candidates will undergo additional examination such as a physical exam by an approved licensed physician and a polygraph test. There is also a written test that is prepared by a special law enforcement organization and includes questions on vocabulary, spelling, reading and math. There are study guides available to help prepare for the written test.
If all exams are satisfactory, candidates will proceed to receiving training in a police academy, after which they will become police officers, provided they successfully complete the training.
The website advises aspiring police officers to acquire some level of higher education after high school. An associate’s or bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, for instance, gives the candidate a tremendous advantage over others in terms of both landing a job and higher earning potential; especially for those looking to work at the state or federal level.
Degree holders are better equipped to move up the ranks and reach such positions as lieutenant, captain or police chief, and thereby give themselves a chance at salaries of over $80,000 a year, depending on geographical location and law enforcement agency.
